Welcome to the home of the iproute.info project

Our Goal

The goal of the iproute.info project is to provide participating network operators with a new tool in the fight against Denial of Service type attacks. The iproute.info project provides a mechanism for network operators to automatically initiate a blackhole or null route of their own IP addresses on the networks of other participants. Potentially malicious traffic originating from any participating network would then be dropped before leaving the participants network.

How It Works -- Old Dog, New Trick

The iproute.info project uses industry-standard BGP version 4 to exchange information between participating networks. The iproute.info project operators a number of route servers to which each participating network establishes a standard session. All sessions are encrypted using MD5 and a unique password. The session for each participating network is filtered based on prefix, and a stringent authorization process is applied to all filters.

To initiate a blackhole on all participating networks, a participant would simply configure their router to announce the IP address they wish to blackhole to the iproute.info route server via their BGP session. The IP address would then be re-distributed from the iproute.info route server to all other participants, who would in turn utilize a standard route map or other mechanism to drop any traffic destined to that IP address.
